The planned acquisition by Bally’s Intralot raises even more questions

Evoke, the company behind brands like William Hill, 888, and Mr Green, recently released its Q3 financial results. As revenues decreased 7% year-over-year, Evoke leadership blamed the UK’s unstable regulatory environment. The company recently shut down some of its UK properties, and its troubles extend abroad as well. The upcoming takeover by Bally’s Intralot adds additional uncertainty.

Debt Remains a Major Problem for Evoke

Evoke recently reported Q3 revenues of GBP 406 million ($540.36 million), a 7% drop from 2025. The group justified part of the slump with a spike in sports betting results that favored customers. However, these user-friendly results accounted for only 1-2% of the decrease, suggesting other problems for the company. Many of the recent troubles surround the William Hill brand.

William Hill recently closed 270 UK betting shops due to financial difficulties. Evoke CEO Per Widerström cited the country’s recent tax hikes as the primary reason behind this decision. The move was part of a broader plan to cut costs and reduce Evoke’s GBP 1.8 billion ($2.4 billion) debt, which then outweighed its market value of roughly GBP 210 million ($280 million).

These closures could affect more than 10% of its 1,300 UK locations, putting over 1,500 jobs at risk. However, the UK government remains adamant about the tax increases as the nation struggles to form its next budget. The wave of closures could also extend to Evoke’s primary competitor, Entain, which owns the  Ladbrokes and Coral brands.

The Upcoming Buyout Could Solve Some Issues

Evoke is also facing difficulties in other regions. Last year, William Hill pulled out of several regions in Africa and South Asia to streamline its business and reduce expenses. Despite rising pressure, CEO Widerström remained optimistic. He noted that the business remained resilient and was working to achieve sustained profitability in its core markets.

This newest financial update could prove pivotal in its upcoming acquisition by Bally’s Intralot. In August, shareholders greenlit the deal, meaning that it could complete in the final quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027. Analysts generally see this development as positive for Evoke, as it would relieve much of the company’s debt burden.

With the upcoming acquisition, faltering revenues, and troubles across several jurisdictions, Evoke’s future is looking increasingly uncertain. The company’s shares are currently trading at 42.85 GBX ($0.57), a staggering drop from Evoke’s 2021 share price of 382.8 GBX ($5.10). It is also unclear how Bally’s Intralot will treat the company’s venues and whether more closures could be expected.
