Recent data from the New York State Gaming Commission revealed that the state’s gambling industry remains healthy. While some feared that prediction markets would siphon customers away from the regulated market, state sportsbooks recorded a sizeable increase in betting handle. Meanwhile, casino gambling profits decreased slightly, though the sector remains stable.

Gambling Sector Metrics Showed Resilience
New York State Gaming Commission data showed that land-based wagering accounted for $184 million in monthly gross gaming revenue (GGR) for September. This sum is a 7% decrease from August’s $199 million. Net revenue followed a similar trend, settling at $109.5 million, down from $118.9 million last month. The data also reveals some interesting trends.

While slots, table games, and poker all followed the previous pattern, retail sports wagering stood out. Betting handle skyrocketed to $4.4 million from $2 million in August. Sports wagering GGR followed suit, rising to an all-year high of $641,500. However, this stellar performance could not offset the decreases in other verticals.

Online sports betting matched the trajectory of retail wagering. The betting handle for September settled at an impressive $2.4 billion, a 41% increase from $1.7 billion in September. Monthly GGR was $159 million, as favorable betting results reduced operator profitability. Net revenues to platform providers dropped 4.9% from August to $78 million.

New York Remains Firmly Against Prediction Markets
While some industry stakeholders fear prediction markets could divert customers from regulated sportsbooks, recent data appears to suggest otherwise. September’s online sports wagering handle even surpassed June and July, which benefited from the World Cup betting spree. It remains to be seen whether this trend will hold for the rest of the year.

A recent report by Citizens analyst Jordan Bender argued that prediction markets can coexist with regulated sportsbooks. He noted that aggressive marketing spending by prediction platforms may actually be introducing more people to sports betting. Despite the prediction market sector’s growth, major sportsbooks appear to be maintaining their popularity.

Despite the New York sports betting sector’s steady performance, state officials remain firmly against prediction platforms. In February, the state’s attorney general warned that these platforms operated outside local regulations and lacked the safety measures required for licensed sportsbooks. The state even recently took legal action against prediction platforms Coinbase Financial Markets and Gemini Titan.
